Apple’s new M5 MacBook Pro lineup might look like a small update at first, but there’s more going on here than it seems. With Windows laptop prices climbing while Apple’s remain relatively stable, these machines are becoming more appealing.
After testing every configuration, here’s what matters most:
The base M5 model is best if you don’t need performance but want the better display and ports that come with the Pro lineup. It also has the longest battery life and the lowest price, but performance is only slightly better than the Air.
The M5 Pro 15-core model is the sweet spot for most people. It’s well balanced and can handle just about everything.
The M5 Max is built for high-end creative work and GPU-heavy tasks like AI development. It’s very impressive, but it comes at a higher cost and with shorter battery life.
Here’s how everything plays out in detail.

Apple used to dominate battery life, but this year is a bit different.
With our updated testing, which includes brighter screens, office workloads, and Bluetooth enabled, here’s what we saw:
The base M5 model lasted around 10 and a half hours, making it the best of the group.
The M5 Pro models came in at about 9 hours.
The M5 Max dropped to just over 8 hours.
What’s surprising is that older M3 Pro and M4 Pro models actually lasted longer, even with some battery wear from years of use.
Windows laptops are also catching up here, especially highly optimized systems like the Dell XPS 14.
If you’re doing creative work, the M5 Pro and Max models deliver a great experience.
The base M5 struggles with full 4K playback and drops a lot of frames. At half resolution it becomes usable, but you will still notice occasional stutter.
The M5 Pro models are much smoother. Playback is solid, especially at half resolution where they drop no frames.
The M5 Max stands out. It handles full resolution playback almost perfectly with virtually no dropped frames.
Export speeds tell a similar story. The Max models are the fastest, largely because they have two media engines. The Pro models are noticeably slower, and adding more GPU cores doesn’t make much difference here.
Compared to older models, the jump from M3 Pro is significant. From M4 Pro, the improvement is much smaller.
Results are consistent across other creative workloads.
The M5 Max leads, especially in GPU-heavy tasks. The higher GPU version of the M5 Pro shows a small improvement, but it’s not dramatic.
Nvidia GPUs still perform very well, especially in rendering tasks.
Gaming performance has improved, but this still isn’t what these laptops are built for.
The M5 Pro and Max models can run older AAA titles like Cyberpunk 2077 at over 60 FPS, especially at lower resolutions. The base M5 struggles and isn’t really suitable for demanding games.
Windows laptops with dedicated GPUs still offer much better gaming performance.
AI workloads are one of the biggest areas where the M5 chips improve.
There’s a noticeable jump from M4 Pro to M5 Pro. Moving from the base M5 to an M5 Pro also makes a big difference.
The M5 Max performs best since it can sustain more power.
Compared to Windows laptops, an RTX 5070 Ti performs similarly to an M5 Pro. Higher-end GPUs like the 5080 still outperform both.

CPU performance remains one of Apple’s biggest strengths.
The M5 Pro and Max chips deliver excellent results in both Geekbench and Cinebench. The difference between the higher-end Pro and Max chips is small since they share the same number of CPU cores.
If you’re coming from an M3 Pro or older, the performance jump is substantial. From M4 Pro, it’s more modest.
Apple continues to prioritize quiet operation.
During light use, all models stay cool and silent. Under heavier workloads, they remain quiet but get noticeably warm.
In stress testing, the M5 Max 14-inch reached around 122°F (50°C) on the keyboard deck. That’s warmer than many gaming laptops.
If you plan to push your system regularly, the 16-inch model is the better choice. It runs cooler and handles sustained performance more comfortably.
Memory bandwidth has improved, which helps overall performance.
Storage is faster, but in real-world use, the difference is hard to notice.
Wi-Fi 7 is included, but Apple’s implementation is limited. Gains over Wi-Fi 6E are minimal.
In 2026, the MacBook Pro design is starting to feel a bit outdated.
It’s thicker and heavier than many competing 14-inch laptops. The edges can feel sharp on your wrists, and the notch is still quite large.
The keyboard is still good, but it’s no longer the standout it once was.
While prices may seem higher at first, the value has actually improved.
Base configurations now include more storage, which makes them easier to buy from retailers and take advantage of discounts.
Typical deals are around $150 off for Pro models and $300 to $400 off for Max models.
If you’re coming from an M4 Pro, it’s probably not worth upgrading.
From an M3 Pro or older, the improvement is significant.
If you find an M4 model on sale, it’s still a great option unless you specifically need the GPU improvements in the M5.
The M5 MacBook Pro isn’t a dramatic update, but it doesn’t need to be.
It delivers strong performance, excellent efficiency, and meaningful improvements in GPU and AI workloads. At the same time, battery life has taken a small step back, thermals are higher under load, and the design is starting to feel dated.
For most people, the M5 Pro 15-core is the right choice.
For power users, the M5 Max in the 14-inch chassis is surprisingly capable. It offers a level of performance in a compact form factor that’s still hard to match.
